When we first met this family, it was clear that they live life to the fullest and deeply experience every moment. They were already living the hygge life, but they needed their home to reflect it. That’s where we came in. We had long conversations about how they live and what they were looking to see. As always, we listened hard, and the result was stunning.
As soon as we walked into the home, we noticed that the home was not flowing well. There were walls at strange 45-degree angles and half walls creating pinch points and breaking up the flow of the space. We didn’t gain any square footage in this renovation, but we gained a lot of functionality by moving around a few walls here and there. This home underwent a full transformation from top-to-bottom. We moved some structural walls and reimagined the space so that when you walk in, you feel enveloped with a warm hug.
We updated the kitchen with exquisite new cabinetry, countertops and a gorgeous conversation-piece island with seating for 5 people. Hidden behind a secret door is a pantry fit for this home-preserving chef. The dining room now has seating for eight for all those lavish dinner parties the home owner will throw. To serve those thirsty guests, there is a wet bar stationed in between the kitchen and the dining room complete with a Miele coffee station, built in fridge, and drawers that can handle the weight of bottles. The family room was updated with a modern gas fireplace and built-in shelving for all the family artifacts.
Our homeowner sometimes works from home and now they might work from home more often with the home office updates. We bumped back the non-structural walls a bit and added glorious glazing that allows privacy, but also the light to pass freely through this now very bright home. The mudroom was expanded and made exceptionally functional for this family of four, but it’s so gorgeous I think they’ll have a hard time wanting to traipse any mud through this room. We also moved the laundry from the mudroom to its own walk-in closet on the second level where the majority of the laundry happens. You will want to sneak into the master ensuite washroom when you see the luxurious steam shower and soaker tub. And let’s not forget about the hidden cabinet for all of the wonderful bathroom products to be stowed. Moving along to the lower level, we updated the dated wet bar and added a full wall of cabinetry and countertop space as well as furnished it with a sofa table so everyone can enjoy the big game on the entertainment centre. In addition to the things we just mentioned, we replaced flooring, painted the walls a brightening white and updated the lighting fixtures throughout the home.
As this renovation was too large to be done justice by our projects page, we created a 2-part video case study for this renovation. You can watch Krista walk you through the home in Part 1 and Part 2 or read a more full description there as well. It’s your choice!
